Home' Spa and Clinic : Volume 59 November 2014 Contents Our new range of premium
tanning solutions now includes
organic botanicals such as
aloe, green tea and coconut
extracts to add extra nourishing
and hydration benefits.
We asked Mark Robson, CEO of
SunFX, for seven tips for success in
the spray tanning business:
1. Sunless or spray tanning is here
to stay and has entrenched
itself in the world of beauty, but
it needs to be researched and
respected like any other quality
treatment or therapy that salons
and spas offer.
2. Seek out the most professional
systems on offer to find out if
they’ve been researched and
developed by world leaders.
3. Avoid the temptation to “see
how it goes” and install a cheap
system. Bad spray tans or faulty
equipment will spell disaster for
your hard-earned reputation:
invest in quality equipment that
is designed to last.
4. Seek out quality spray tanning
formulations – water-based
formulas with an infusion of
organic and natural ingredients
Learn and understand how
tanning works with a variety
of skin types and be in control
- advise your clients on the
finishes that will be most
appropriate for their skin type.
5. Offer great home care that
includes both tan-extending
body lotions and pre-tan body
polishes to create the base for
tans that go on evenly and
6. Loyalty and referral programs
like “buy 5 and get 1 free” and
“bring a friend for a 50 percent
discount” work wonders in the
tanning world. Include a bridal
party and formal offer on your
menu and marketing.
7. Perhaps most obvious but also
most overlooked: offer the best
service. Invest in training to ensure
your therapists instil trust in their
clients. The majority of spray
tanners will seek out places where
they feel well treated and feel
relaxed with their therapist. Show
personal interest and don’t treat
your tanners like a number or a
nuisance, even when you're busy.
All these things will single out
your salon or spa to be both
professional and inviting for that
discerning, and loyal, spray tanner.
green tea and coconut extracts to add extra
nourishing and hydration benefits.
Additionally, we have recently updated
our best selling Pro Series equipment. We
are intent on raising the bar and continuing
to provide the best and most professional
equipment to the industry. In the near
future, we will also release new technology
that has been under development for quite
a while and, again, we have been guided
by the feedback from our close affiliation
with the world’s best spas. Incorporating
new sound insulation technology, these will
be the world’s quietest systems and have a
one-button set-up that optimises speed, heat
and spray without any fiddly dials or LED
displays for spray technicians to worry about.
We have always kept all manufacturing
in-house which gives us better control and,
we believe, better products.
What are the trends that spray
tanning operators should be
Being among market leaders for over 15
years, we have seen the application of better
spray technology and improvements in
spray techniques too. The first spray tans
could take up to 30 minutes to apply and
have clients leav ing the salon covered in
over-spray! We introduced the first high
volume, low pressure equipment that sped
up the tanning application to just five to
seven minutes and without all that excessive
overspray and wasted solution.
But since then we have seen the
introduction of extremely cheap Chinese-
manufactured tanning systems and
solutions. This has given rise to untrained
operators and inferior tan offerings. We
are constantly hearing complaints from
returning clients who have been lured away
by cheap offers.
The formulations today are many
and varied – the majority of companies
follow our lead of continuously improv ing
with higher quality tanning solutions.
Unfortunately, some companies include
poor quality ing redients – like propylene
glycol (antifreeze) and alcohols.
This part of the market is probably here
to stay, but quality salons and spas will stick
to reputable suppliers in the industr y that
provide warranties, back-up and support.
What do you predict will be
next in this rapidly evolving
There is still more to offer – even more
efficient designs and quieter systems. There
are always new things to be tested and
tried in solutions and ingredients, though
operators also need to remind themselves
the world of beauty is full of trends that
come and go and the results don’t always
live up to the hype.
Some things we may see are formulations
that effect actuation of the melanin in the
skin to provide a dark base that lasts a lot
longer. There have been attempts at this
through injections in the recent years, but
they’ve come with a lot of side effects. If
applied topically, these ingredients may
provide a better way of deepening and
prolonging the tan. Of course with this
breakthrough the salons would be able
to charge more – which prov ides an even
better chance of higher return from an
already profitable segment.
