should I say screwed).

disorganised, strange as that
sounds. Moreover, I had become far too
reliant on a machine always performing.
The experience has actually weaned me
off the need to be constantly accessing my

us in April. Although
she has just graduated

With a passion for makeup and skincare,

A FEW DAYS before the
deadline of this issue I'd
spent a day writing stories
and gathering photos to send
to our designer Leanne.
As always, I used my
personal laptop, which
has become something of
a third limb over the past
three years. It went (notice
the past tense) practically
everywhere with me except
There was barely a waking moment I
wasn't glued to it for something or other,
even on weekends and holidays.
Yep, I was addicted all right. And it
meant that home and work became virtually
So imagine the meltdown I had when, after
a day of writing and sourcing photos, suddenly
and inexplicably the screen of my laptop
started flashing wildly ... and went blank.
Despite a dire warning by my computer
guy only a few weeks before that I should
for such an eventuality, did I do it? No sireee.
The screen resuscitated intermittently
throughout the evening enough for me to
move a whole bunch of the most pressing
stuff to flash keys, but it was only the tip of a
Titanic iceberg of data going back years.
While my ailing laptop waits its turn to
be examined by Dr Mac to see if there's
any hope of recovery - or even if I can just
recover the data - I had to scrabble around
gathering wads of information and photos
all over again and try to find information
on my work emails using the tiny screen of
an iPhone. Not recommended for fun.
To aggravate matters further, I had to
work between dinosaur-like desktop PC at
home and the office, which was like learning
a new language and typing on keyboards
that by comparison with my beloved laptop
were like ancient typewriters. A week never
to be remembered (after this column).
So the point of this rave is that this issue
of SPA+CLINIC has a great deal to do with
digital technology - how it can both enhance
and harm our lives and work.
I have certainly realised how direly I
needed a digital detox, as harrowing as it
was to have my laptop go kaput and take all
my data with it on the cusp of deadline.
It made me realise how much
